I think the situation with advanced AI in the future might be similar to what we have now with smartphones — people often complain about how people are addicted to staring at the screen and are terrified about smartphones decreasing your connections with humans. Even thought they complain and are worried about it, nothing changes. We keep using the smartphones. Whether they really are harmful or not is a different discussion. Will AI be truly harmful? We don’t really know yet.
It’s true that people of power are more dangerous than robots and they are the ones we should fear. That’s why I find it quite comforting to see that Elon Musk’s — one of the most influential people — AI company decided to refrain from disclosing their research which could be misused by people. By this Musk and the rest of OpenAI show that organizations working on such sensitive and important matters like AI can and need to take responsibility.
